Baby Cribs – What You Need To Know
There are so many different price ranges, types and styles of baby cribs available today that it can be quite mind boggling. The first questions that should pop into your head are what you should be looking for and where to start. Crib safety should be the most important consideration for the babys sake. This will include crib placement as well as several other safety related aspects. This is a very important consideration when looking at meeting the needs of your little one. No matter if you are building your own or buying one, there are a few tips that you should use when choosing a crib.
Safety is always the first thing to be concerned with when buying a baby crib. For any new crib that you buy they should meet minimum safety standards as set up by the government. If it is not a new one you will need to check and repair any problems that you may find. All of the information here can be used for this as well to ensure safety on cribs that are being built. Check all slats to be sure none are broken or missing. This holds true for all the hardware as well. You should make sure that all the hardware is properly tightened. Head boards and foot boards are adorable with the cute cutouts but they are not safe so leave these out or, if you buy one second hand, close them up so that baby cant get stuck in them.
Baby cribs usually come with one or both sides that can be dropped to a lower position for ease in cleaning or when caring for the baby. There are several kinds of latches that are used to lower the sides. Whatever type of latch is used be sure it works properly for lowering and especially raising them and locking in place. The posts or slats on the sides or around the cribs should be no more than 2-1/8 apart to prevent the little one from getting stuck between them. Check each post or slat for problems such as loose, broken or rough edges. With older baby cribs also check for loose paint and that the paint used was not lead based. The top post at each corner of the head and foot board should not be any higher than 1/16.
The next issue in safety for baby cribs is the mattress that will be used. Even for those cribs that come with a mattress make sure that it fits snuggly into the crib on every side. It is no surprise that babies are movers, even newborns. You dont want a baby to get caught between the sides and the mattress. Mattresses should always be kept at the lowest possible position or closest to the floor.
Baby cribs come in all shapes and sizes, but the best thing that you can do when purchasing a crib is to be sure it is safe and secure. Its a known fact that babies move wiggle and squirm.
